Japan Launching Ambitious Asteroid-Sampling Mission in 2014

Japan's space agency is readying a new asteroid probe for launch, an ambitious mission that aims to build on the victory of the country's first round-trip asteroid mission that sent the Hayabusa spacecraft to retrieve samples of the space rock Itokowa.

The new Japanese asteroid mission, called Hayabusa2, is scheduled for launch in 2014 and aimed at the asteroid 1999 JU3, a large space rock about 3,018 feet (920 meters) in length. It is due to arrive at the asteroid in mid-2018, loiter at the space rock and carry out a slew of challenging firsts before departing the scene at the end of 2019.

If all goes well, the Hayabusa2 spacecraft will return to Earth with samples of asteroid 1999 JU3 at the end of 2020. The probe's name is Japanese for "Falcon2."

Building on success

Officials with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said Hayabusa2, like its Hayabusa predecessor, will also involve a significant level of international cooperation. The initial Hayabusa mission launched in May 2003 and returned samples of Itokawa ? the first asteroid samples ever collected in space ? in June 2010. [Japan Returns 1st Asteroid Samples to Earth (Photos)]

Like that first flight, the Hayabusa2 mission will rely on NASA?s Deep Space Network of ground stations to help track the spacecraft. The spacecraft's return capsule will also land in Australia, another similarity to the first flight.

Hayabusa2 is expected to stay with asteroid 1999 JU3 for more than a year, 18 months in all, thereby allowing ample time for observation and careful sample collection, according to the mission's project manager Makoto Yoshikawa of Japan's the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS).

Asteroid 1999 JU3 is of particular interest to researchers because it consists of 4.5-billion-year-old material that has been altered very little. Measurements taken from Earth suggest that the asteroid?s rock may have come into contact with water.

The C-type asteroid is expected to contain organic and hydrated minerals, making it different from Itokawa, which was a rocky S-type asteroid. Asteroid 1999 JU3 is also larger than Itokawa, which was 1,771 (540 m) long.

New and novel hardware

While the configuration of Hayabusa2 is similar to that of the first Hayabusa, the second probe will carry new and novel asteroid-studying hardware.

For example, the antenna for Hayabusa was a single parabolic dish, but Hayabusa2 will sport two flat high-gain antennas to support faster communication speeds than its predecessor. Also, Hayabusa2 is to will fly through space with more propulsion power from its ion engines. [How Japan's 1st Asteroid Probe Worked (Infographic)]

Another addition is a 4-pound (2 kilograms) "collision device" that will be used to create an artificial crater on asteroid 1999 JU3 during the mission. This human-caused dent is expected to be a small one, a few meters in diameter. But it will allow Hayabusa2 to acquire samples of the asteroid that are exposed by the smashing event, fresh specimens that are less weathered by the brutal space environment on the asteroid's surface.

Yoshikawa noted that during the first Hayabusa mission, the probe's MIcro/Nano Experimental Robot Vehicle for Asteroid (MINERVA) failed to reach the surface of Itokawa. "So for Hayabusa2 we have even greater motivation to succeed with our new version of the robot, MINERVA2."

Hayabusa2's MASCOT hitchhiker

For its part, the German Aerospace Center?s (DLR) Institute of Space Systems in Bremen is contributing the Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout asteroid lander, or Mascot, to the JAXA mission. Mascot is being developed by DLR in collaboration with the French space agency and JAXA.

After Hayabusa2 arrives at asteroid 1999 JU3 in 2018, Mascot will be released from the main spacecraft. A spring-loaded mechanism will push the 22-pound (10 kilograms) lander clear of from Hayabusa2.

Mascot is a "hopping" lander packed with four separate instruments and is designed to move across the surface of an asteroid. Doing so will enable it to take measurements at different sites. As Mascot performs the near-asteroid maneuvers, a radiometer will measure the temperature of the asteroid and a camera will image the fine structure of the surface of 1999 JU3.

The lander will be controlled from DLR's Microgravity User Support Center in Cologne.

Free-falling on an asteroid

"Mascot will free-fall to the asteroid from an altitude of around 100 meters [328 feet]," said Tra-Mi Ho, DLR's project leader for the device, in a statement. Sensors will then ensure that Mascot knows which way is up and down, so it can orient itself and, if necessary, correct its attitude.

Once on the asteroid, Mascot is expected to automatically adjust itself and "hop" from one measurement site to the next.

"Mascot is due to take measurements of the regolith itself, which will provide reference data about the surface and enable the samples subsequently brought back by Hayabusa2 to be interpreted in the correct context," said Ralf Jaumann, a DLR planetary researcher and scientific spokesman for the experiments on the lander.

Mascot will work on the asteroid for a total of 16 hours, the equivalent of two days on asteroid 1999 JU3.

Up close with an asteroid

"We anticipate obtaining close-up photographs of the asteroid surface up to the order of centimeter-level resolution, something that Hayabusa1 was unable to capture,? said Masanao Abe, Hayabusa2 project scientist at ISAS.

The experience gained from that first Hayabusa mission, in terms of asteroid sample collection and analysis technologies, is proving highly useful, Abe said.

"Japan is at the forefront of sample-return technology and execution," Abe added "and we are constantly thinking about how we can maintain our position and steadily working on things that will keep us at the leading edge."

New discoveries ahead

Akio Fujimura, an advisor in JAXA's Lunar and Planetary Exploration Program Group, said that in Hayabusa2's snagging of carbonaceous asteroid material, there is a high probability of gaining samples that contain organic matter ? the fundamental building blocks of life.

"So, first, I expect Hayabusa2 to be a success. Then after that, I'd like us to proceed with an inquiry concerning where we came from and how life came about," Fujimura said. "It would be great to uncover the origins of the solar system, Earth, the other planets, and life itself by getting information that we can't obtain here on Earth. I'd like us to open up new lines of scientific inquiry that seek to discover these origins."

JAXA and the ISAS has learned a great deal from the first Hayabusa mission, said Michael Zolensky, a Hayabusa team member in sample analysis at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

"Although the second spacecraft is based on the first one, they have made significant upgrades and expanded the capabilities of the spacecraft for Hayabusa2," Zolensky told SPACE.com. "It should be a fantastic mission. No fooling."

Apple drops patent claim against Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini will not be involved in the next round of the never-ending Apple vs Samsung patent war.

The little brother of the flagship Galaxy S3 had been named alongside a host of Samsung devices which, according to Cupertino, infringe Apple's intellectual property.

The warring companies had been asked to present their lists of disputed devices as they gear up for a second trial in California, scheduled to begin in March 2014.

As the Galaxy S3 Mini is not being sold in the United States, Apple has sportingly agreed to strike it from the list.

Round two

However, it's not as if Samsung will be doing cartwheels about the news. Apple's list still includes the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Rugby Pro devices.

Apple also reserves the right to reinsert the S3 Mini if Samsung decides to launch it Stateside.

The second trial, which follows Apple's crushing victory this summer, will also hear Samsung's claims about the iPhone 5.

Medication Related Incontinence | Natural Holistic Health Blog

There are many illnesses and conditions which can cause a person to suffer from incontinence, varying from severe to mild cases. However, there is also medication related incontinence where certain medications can cause difficulties as well. Some of these medications act in a way that affects how the body produces and eliminates urine, in turn causing many people to suffer from issues with incontinence.

There are common drug classes which are associated with incontinence including, but not limited to, diuretics, certain hypertension drugs, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. There are others as well which can cause some people to suffer from incontinence, which will be discussed below.

Diuretics Perhaps the most common drug that causes issues for most people are diuretics, such as Lasix. These drugs are commonly referred to as water pills because they actually work to elevate the rate of urination (diuresis). Since they are working to increase the excretion of water from the body, they often can cause incontinence, especially in older people who have weaker muscles and others who already have impaired continence.

Sedatives (sleeping pills), Hypnotic CNS Depressants, and Benzodiazepines (especially ones such as flurazepam and diazepam (Valium)) ? These drugs can build up in the bloodstream of older people leading to confusion altering their ability to recognize when they need to void, leading to urinary tract infections and incontinence.

Anticholinergic agents: Antihistamines, Antidepressants (TCA), Phenothiazines,
Disopyramides, Opiates, Antispasmodics, Parkinson drugs, Alpha-adrenergic agents People suffering from insomnia, pruritus (itchy skin), vertigo (dizziness) as well as other conditions, often take prescription or over-the-counter drugs with anticholinergic properties. One of the common side effects is urinary retention with increased urinary frequency and overflow incontinence.

Calcium channel blockers (Heart and blood pressure medications) These drugs can cause the smooth muscle contractility in the bladder to weaken sometimes leading to urinary retention and overflow incontinence.

Alpha-adrenergic agents (high blood pressure drugs) and Sympathomimetics (decongestants), Sympatholytics (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, and doxazosin) Alpha-agonists can cause symptoms of urinary retention in older men, while women prescribed alpha-antagonists for hypertension can suffer from symptoms of stress incontinence. Urinary retention and overflow incontinence may occur in older men with an enlarged prostate when they take multi-component cold capsules containing alpha-agonists and antichoinergic agents. This is especially a concern if a nasal decongestant and over-the-counter hypnotic antihistamine are taken as well.

Alcohol Although not a medication, it is important to recognize alcohol as a potential cause of urinary incontinence as well. Alcohol can alter memory, impair mobility, leading to increased urine output that can lead to incontinence. Not only that, it also acts as a sedative which can alter a persons ability to recognize when they have a need to void.

Many medications will have side effects which can lead indirectly to leakage or incontinence issues, so it is important to research any medication you are taking if you have concerns. Medication related incontinence is something that is not permanent, and can be dealt with either by changing medications or simply being aware of the potential for problems, and learning how to adapt your lifestyle to accommodate any incontinence concerns.

Extreme Diet Hacking With Tech: How Cheesecake Made Me Leaner And Stronger With Carb Backloading

photo (39)Never before have I binged so many delicious desserts, yet been stronger or more ripped. For 3 weeks, I experimented with a cult bodybuilding diet, Carb Backloading, which promises outcomes too good to be true: slam carbs at night after heavy lifting, get slimmer and build muscle. Like all web sensations, there aren't any large scale studies, and anecdotal reviews never properly control for all the right variables. Only a methodical body hacking experiment, with the latest gadgets and devices tracking calorie burn, fat loss, and training intensity, could legitimately test this dream diet. The results? Despite eating a thousand more calories a day--mostly comprised of sundaes and cheesecake--I've maintained my weight, have noticeable ab definition, and increased my strength an average of 37% over all muscle groups.

How to Help an Addict during the Holidays

The holidays are a time to celebrate, but they can also be extremely stressful for addicts. Family problems and lack of money around this time of year cause many people to increase their drug or alcohol abuse or return to an old addiction. For these reasons, the holidays present a challenge to people who want to help friends or family members kick the habit. Here are some tips for approaching this situation.

1. Listen without judgment
Let the addict tell you what they?re experiencing with their addiction. Don?t dismiss their feelings or give them a self-righteous speech about their behavior, as this will only create feelings of guilt and make the addict want to continue abusing drugs and alcohol. Be empathetic and let them know that you understand.

2. Encourage the addict?s efforts at quitting
If the addict is improving in any way, let them know that you recognize their achievements and are proud of them. Recent progress in abstinence should be praised because it?s difficult at any time of year. Be sure to give genuine encouragement; avoid patronizing.

3. Stand your ground concerning addiction
It?s important for you to empathize with the addict, but always be clear on where you stand regarding their addiction. Don?t condone any form of drug or alcohol abuse, period. At the same time, don?t try to actively control any adult addict?s behavior. Let them learn their own lessons unless their actions put themselves or others at risk.

4. Keep stress to a minimum
Let go of the addict?s past failures and transgressions. Bringing up past events they are ashamed of will only feed their addiction. Do what you can to help the addict feel like part of the group, and avoid bringing up serious issues that might ruin the moment and drive the addict away, physically or emotionally.

5. Treat the addict lovingly
No treatment will be as effective as giving the addict your trust and love. Open you heart to the addict, making sure to let them know that you support their efforts to quit and want them to be happy.

6. Don?t humiliate the addict
Addicts are all different, but none are proud of being addicted. There?s no need to tell other people about the addict?s struggles or bring up private matters around others.

These are only general guidelines for helping an addict around the holidays. Always remember that rather than being bad people, addicts are simply struggling with something very challenging. With your support, the addict may have an easier time breaking free of addiction.

Newtown trying to give kids a sense of normalcy

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The children at the Sandy Hook Elementary school won't be returning to classes for another week, but officials from the town, school district and local agencies are doing their best in the meantime to keep them occupied following a massacre at their school two weeks ago.

The students have not attended school since a gunman killed 20 of their schoolmates and six adults on Dec. 14. They are slated to return to a different school next Thursday.

In the meantime, they've been treated to field trips, toy giveaways and some organized play time.

"A couple of the teachers have done pizza parties," said Janet Robinson, Newtown's school superintendent. "Another met her kids at the library so they could have a little reading time together. The most important thing has been connecting the students back to their teacher and their classmates."

The Newtown Youth Academy, a nonprofit sports center, opened its doors to all kids in town at no cost shortly after the shooting. But from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. last week, the building's turf field, basketball and tennis courts, and giant inflatable obstacle course were reserved just for Sandy Hook Elementary students.

There have been arts and crafts for the smaller kids, as well as face-paintings. Some celebrities, including two members of the Harlem Globetrotters and former University of Connecticut basketball star Tina Charles, also have stopped by to play with the children. UConn's men's basketball team was making a trip Thursday.

"The idea was to get them away from the house, the television and all the coverage of this tragedy and get them to a place where kids can just be kids," said owner Peter D'Amico, a longtime youth coach in town.

On Thursday afternoon, school buses were loading up at the Youth Academy for a trip to Stamford and a larger complex, Chelsea Piers, which also has ice rinks and an indoor swimming pool, he said. Sports celebrities, such as Brooklyn Nets forward Kris Humphries, planned to meet them there. No media were allowed.

University of Connecticut psychologist Julian Ford, who spent time counseling in Newtown in the first days after the shooting, said it's important for the grieving process to include an outlet that lets children know that while things will never be the same, it's OK to enjoy life.

"They are all going to be thinking about what happened," he said. "That, unfortunately, is inescapable. But this gives them a chance to say, 'Life is carrying on.' Nothing will be the same, but it's also continuing in ways that it should be."

Some students and their parents on Thursday toured the Chalk Hill school in Monroe, a former middle school being reopened next week for the Sandy Hook students. An open house is planned for Wednesday.

"Getting back into the school is like getting back on the horse," Robinson said. "Some of the scariness is gone once they cross that threshold. They are just so happy to see their teachers."

State police said they plan to keep their contact with the children to a minimum as they continue investigating the shooting.

"We certainly don't want to traumatize them any more than they've already been traumatized," said Lt. J. Paul Vance, the department's spokesman. "If (an interview is) not necessary it won't be done. Our investigators will make all those determinations."

In the meantime, Ford has encouraged parents to keep the kids involved in a normal holiday routine and deal with the tragedy as it comes up, rather than making it a focal point of their lives.

David Connors, who has 8-year-old triplets who attend Sandy Hook, said he and his wife have made play dates with their friends, brought the kids to see family for the holidays and participated in the class get-togethers and recreation events.

"That's been, I think, helpful at least in the short term just to kind of keep them doing things, keep them seeing their friends and being nearby and talking to family," Connors said.

Todd Wood of Newtown has five children, the youngest age 4 and the oldest in college. His children's piano teacher lost a child in the shooting, and the family knows other victims as well.

He said he's found that each child has reacted differently to the tragedy. He said he is not making the shooting the center of his family's life but is not pretending it didn't happen, either.

"We did Christmas, we had our lights here, we've tried to make things as normal as possible," he said. "But we also went down to see the memorials. I don't want to shield them from it. I want to let them grieve in their own way."

Ford said that is healthy. He said children will remember their friends as they go about doing normal kid things.

Chris Wolcott, the sport's academy's operations manager, said the best part of having the kids at the center is that the tragedy is pushed aside, at least for a little while.

"A couple times someone would drop a weight (in the facility's health center) and you would hear a bang and there would be a kid who would freeze for a second," he said. "But that would last a split-second. Most of the time, everyone just had a great time."

1 billion deal major step in Toyota legal - Salt Lake Tribune

FILE - In this photo taken June 25, 2011, file photo, Toyota keys sit in a fish bowl at the Toyota of Tampa Bay dealership in Tampa, Fla. A plaintiffs' attorney on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, says Toyota Motor Corp. has reached a settlement in a case involving hundreds of lawsuits over accelerations problems. Steve Berman said Wednesday the settlement, which still needs a federal judge's approval, was worth more than $1 billion and is the largest settlement in U.S. history involving automobile defects. (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)

LOS ANGELES ? With a proposed payout of more than $1 billion, one major chapter of a nearly four-year legal saga that left Toyota Motor Corp. fighting hundreds of lawsuits and struggling with a tarnished image has ended, though another remains.

The settlement ? unprecedented in its size according to a plaintiff?s attorney ? brings an end to claims from owners who said the value of their vehicles plunged after recalls over sudden and unintended acceleration.

Lawsuits claiming that the defects caused injury or death remain, with the first trial beginning in February unless another major deal comes first.

Steve Berman, a lawyer representing Toyota owners, said the settlement is the largest in U.S. history involving automobile defects.

"We kept fighting and fighting and we secured what we think was a good settlement given the risks of this litigation," Berman told The Associated Press.

The courtroom claims began with a highway tragedy. A California Highway Patrol officer and three of his family members were killed in suburban San Diego in 2009 after their car, a Toyota-built Lexus, reached speeds of more than 120 mph, hit an SUV, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and burst into flames.

Investigators determined that a wrong-size floor mat trapped the accelerator and caused the crash.

That discovery, and the accident?s grisliness, spurred a series of recalls involving more than 14 million vehicles and a flood of lawsuits soon followed, with numerous complaints of accelerations in several models, and brake defects with the Prius hybrid.

The Japanese automaker has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems.

The runaway Lexus case was settled separately for $10 million in 2010, before the cases were consolidated by U.S. District Judge James Selna.

story continues below

Selna divided them into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. He needs to approve Wednesday?s settlement, which only applies to the first group of lawsuits. The deal was filed Wednesday and Selna is expected to review it on Friday.

Toyota said it will take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

As part of the economic loss settlement, Toyota will offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010.

The company also will launch a $250 million program for 16 million current owners to provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components, and it will retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system. An override system is designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

"In keeping with our core principles, we have structured this agreement in ways that work to put our customers first and demonstrate that they can count on Toyota to stand behind our vehicles," said Christopher Reynolds, Toyota vice president and general counsel.

Current and former Toyota owners are expected to receive more information about the settlement in the coming months.

Ask The Experts | Family Health & Wellness Magazine

Q: ?What?s the difference between a really bad headache and a migraine?

A: ?A migraine headache is a headache that tends to recur in an individual and is moderate to severe if left untreated. It can be one sided, throbbing and aggravated by routine physical activity. It can be associated with light, sound and smell sensitivity and many patients will become nauseated with it. In a minority of patients there can be visual or sensory changes before, during or after the headache, known as auras.? Each migraine typically lasts from four hours to three days, but can last more than a week.

The National Headache Foundation estimates that nearly 30 million Americans, or approximately 12 percent of the population, suffer from migraines. Migraines occur about three times more frequently in women than in men.

The exact causes of migraines are unknown, although they are related to changes in the brain as well as to genetic causes. People with migraines may inherit the tendency to be affected by certain migraine triggers such as fatigue, skipping meals, certain foods, bright lights and weather changes.

For many years, scientists believed that migraines were linked to the expanding (dilation) and constriction (narrowing) of blood vessels on the brain?s surface. However, it is now believed that a migraine is caused by inherited abnormalities in certain areas of the brain. There is a migraine ?pain center? or generator in the mid-brain area. A migraine begins when hyperactive nerve cells send out impulses to the blood vessels leading to the dilation of these vessels and the release of prostaglandins and other inflammatory substances that cause the pulsation to be painful.

Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate a migraine from other serious causes of headaches. Red flags (reasons to get evaluated urgently) are a headache subsequent to head trauma, a headache with a sudden onset (?thunderclap? headache), a headache with signs of systemic illness (fever, stiff neck and/or rash), a headache beginning after 50 years of age (because migraines will typically start under age 50, and over age 50 is more likely to be temporal arteritis?which needs urgent treatment to prevent vision loss?or a mass lesion/brain cancer), headaches increasing in frequency and severity, a headache with focal neurologic signs or symptoms of disease (other than one?s typical aura), or a new-onset headache in a patient with risk factors for HIV infection or cancer.

Report: Top Syrian general joins opposition

BEIRUT (AP) ? A pan-Arab TV station says the general who heads Syria's military police has defected and joined the uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal has appeared in a video aired on Al Arabiya TV saying he is joining "the people's revolution."

In the video aired late Tuesday, al-Shallal said the army deviated from its mission of protecting the nation and became "a gang for killing and destruction."

Dozens of generals have defected since Syria's crisis began in March 2011 but al-Shallal is one of the most senior and held a top post at the time that he left.

In July, Manaf Tlass, a Syrian general, was the first member of Assad's inner circle to break ranks and join the opposition.

2013 New Year's Resolutions for Your Internet Marketing Strategy ...

We make resolutions to get thinner, be healthier, spend more time with friends and finish that 2,000 page book ? why not make one internet marketing resolution for 2013?

I asked our charming, talented internet marketing team to give me their top resolutions for 2013, and here is what they came up with:

Brian: I want to become more technically savvy, especially with coding!

Amanda: The goal in any Internet Marketing campaign is to have it achieve its highest potential. This requires a little creativity and out of the box thinking. I will ask myself questions like this: What am I doing right? What am I doing wrong? What am I missing out on? What are my client?s competitors doing that we are not doing? What are my client?s competitors not doing that we are doing? Having out of the box thinking will give campaigns that little extra boost they may need.

Karie: Develop more quality content and leverage existing photo opportunities, video opportunities, etc. so we have more to share!

Adrienne: I want to make it a point to read at least two internet marketing industry articles every evening, in an effort to learn all I can and stay up to date! As a personal goal, I want to help my boyfriend market his music and grow his audience!

Trevin: My resolution is to find ways to better utilize big data. There?s so much data available in all avenues of online marketing: visitor data, shopping cart data, freely available data. Nearly all of the websites we work with have large datasets of some sort and I?m hoping to create some scalable ways to put this to work for my clients in their inbound marketing efforts.

Xander: To learn foreign language SEO. It?s the new long tail, and there?s a barrier to entry that most SEO?s won?t cross ? the language barrier?but if you can do it, you can reach a ton more people cheaply.

Benn: Leverage social more for SEO, not just a branding tool. Google is becoming more ?real? in that it is trying to use human action as a factor in ranking what is important. Links were the first sign of this effort and we saw a crackdown on quality this year. I feel we will start to see offline variables affect our SERPS even more in 2013. Social is the closest tool at this point which gives Google signals of importance rather than just link from an article. When I say leverage social, this is more than just having a Facebook Business page. It means creating great content and setting up your site to help visitors share and promote on your behalf. Motivating searchers to become advocates socially both on and offline will be just as important for continued growth organically as getting them to your site in the first place. My resolution is becoming a stronger social advocate for my clients.

Krystal: One of my biggest resolutions is to begin experimenting with more advanced reporting techniques in Google Analytics for my clients. I?d like to give them a wide variety of data that hopefully they will consider of value to their business throughout the year.

Not sure which resolution should be top priority for you or your business? Here are the top areas to pay attention to:

Mobile Boom

Though it?s been repeated for a few years now, the PC may finally die in 2013. PC shipments declined for the first time ever in 2012, so I foresee mobile advertising ? and with it, responsive web design ? becoming the new norm as everyone switches to tablets, laptops or just mobile phones.

Local Focus

The only place to start online to acquire new business as a local business is to be present in maps and have reviews readily available to prospective customers. Companies without reviews will be burned simply by the lack of reviews, whether they are positive or negative. This trend can only continue as the importance of customer feedback grows.

Social Media Impacts

Social media?s impact will also spread wider within business infrastructures as brand advocates gain importance and influence over their friends, turning fans into marketers themselves.

Expanded Digital Wallet

? Adobe Systems called Cyber Monday 2012 a record day, estimating $1.98 billion in web sales.?More and more people spend their time and money online each year, and I don?t foresee this trend slipping.

Social Search

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter will inevitably become closely aligned with online search and take it to the next level. Of course, Google+ has begun to tap into the social graph and return results based on connections. In 2013, be sure your company can be found on these platforms.

Semantic Search

What if Google knew you?couldn?t?eat gluten while you were searching for restaurants? Semantic mark-up allows Google to understand these secondary requirements without you typing them in. They do, after all, want to be the ?answer engine?. It is only a matter of time before the other engines follow.

Test, Measure, Report

Whatever you choose to include in your internet marketing strategy for 2013, stick with it! If you?re making a small change, be sure to measure it. Trying new things inevitably creates hurdles, but do your best to see it through. In most cases, you will be generously rewarded for being one of the first adopters.

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after the shot, plans 2013 launch in smartphones and tablets

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after you take the shot, plans to launch in smartphones and tablets next year

Hoping for some after-the-fact focusing in your next smartphone camera? Well, you'll have to wait around a year, but Toshiba's planning exactly that with a new module that houses an array of 500,000 tiny lenses. These are layered in front of the camera sensor, which can then capture slightly different images from compound lens arrangements. These can then be combined in a "complete" picture using Toshiba's own software. The camera will also be able to measure the distance between objects in the shot -- similar to how 3D images are captured -- with the user then able to focus on both close and distant detail, or even create images that are in-focus throughout. Toshiba says the module will also be able to capture video with a similar degree of focus management -- something that Lytro hasn't got around to just yet. The sensor is still a work in progress, but the manufacturer plans to commercialize the module before the end of 2013. Toshiba is looking to ally itself with multiple smartphone (and tablet) makers -- and here's hoping that it finds its way into a device outside of Japan.

Woman's 'Dystextia' Stroke Sign: 'Some is where!'

Dec 25, 2012 12:57pm

gty texting ll 121225 main Womans Dystextia Stroke Sign: Some is where!

Sending garbled texts may be a sign of stroke. Image credit: Stone/Getty Images.

Smartphone autocorrect is famous for scrambling messages into unintelligible gibberish but when one man received this garbled text from his 11-week-pregnant wife, it alarmed him:

?every where thinging days nighing,? her text read. ?Some is where!?

Though that may sound like every text you?ve ever received, the woman?s husband knew her autocorrect was turned off. Fearing some medical issue, he made sure his 25-year-old wife went immediately to the emergency room.

When she got there, doctors noted that she was disoriented,?couldn?t?use her right arm and leg properly and had some difficulty speaking. A magnetic resonance imaging scan ? MRI ? revealed that part of the woman?s brain wasn?t getting enough blood. The diagnosis was stroke.

Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. A short hospital stay and some low-dose blood thinners took care of the symptoms and the rest of her pregnancy was uneventful.

Click here to read about how texting pedestrians risk injuries

The three doctors from Boston?s?Harvard Medical School, who reported the case study online in this week?s?Archives of Neurology, claim this is the first instance they know of where an aberrant text message was used to help diagnose a stroke. In their report, they refer to the woman?s inability to text properly as ?dystextia,? a word coined by medical experts in an earlier case.

Dystextia appears to be a new form of aphasia, a term that refers to any trouble processing language, be it spoken or written. The authors of the Archives paper said that at least theoretically, incoherent text messages will be used more often to flag strokes and other neurological abnormalities that lead to the condition.

?As the accessibility of electronic communication continues to advance, the growing digital record will likely become an increasingly important means of identifying?neurologic?disease, particularly in patient populations that rely more heavily on written rather than spoken communication,? they wrote.

Even though jumbled texts are so common, Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is the director of the stroke center at Duke University, said he also believes it?s possible they can be used to sound the alarm on a person?s neurological state, especially in a case like this where the text consisted of complete words that amounted to nonsense rather than the usual autocorrected muddle.

?It would have been very easy to dismiss because of the normal problems with texting but this was a whole conversation that?wasn?t?making sense,? Goldstein said. ?I might be concerned about a patient based on a text like this if they were telling me they?hadn?t?intended to send a disjointed jumble but they?weren?t?able to correct themselves.?

In diagnosing stroke, Goldstein said both patients and medical professionals tend to discount aphasic symptoms, even in speech, but they can often be the first clue something is up. In this woman?s case, other signs were there. Her obstetrician realized in retrospect that she?d had trouble filling out a form earlier in the day. She had difficulties speaking too which might also have been picked up sooner if a recent upper respiratory infection?hadn?t?reduced her voice to a whisper.

But unlike this woman, most people leave their autocorrect turned on. If we relied solely on maddeningly unintelligible text messages to determine neurological state, neurologists might have lines out the door.

Chinese scholars push for mild political reform

BEIJING (AP) ? More than 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers have urged the country's new Communist Party leaders to undertake moderate political reforms including separating the party from government, though they avoid any mention of ending one-party rule.

The petition drafted by Peking University law professor Zhang Qianfan calls on the party to rule according to the constitution, protect freedom of speech, encourage private enterprise and allow for an independent judicial system. It also calls for the people to be able to elect their own representatives without interference from the Communist Party.

Zhang said there is an urgent need for change to better address the widespread problems the country faces, such as social inequity, abuse of government powers and corruption.

"China runs the risk of revolution and chaos if it does not change," Zhang said.

The document echoes some of the requests made in Charter 08, a 2008 manifesto that made an unusually direct call for an end to single-party rule and other democratic reforms. The manifesto landed its lead architect, dissident writer Liu Xiaobo, in prison for inciting subversion ? an 11-year term he is still serving.

The petition, released on Christmas Day, adopts a milder tone, asking the party leadership to rule within existing laws.

"It is indeed mild," Zhang said Wednesday. "We hope it can be accepted by the government and will kick off conversations between the government and the people and among the public."

China's communist leaders have tolerated no political challenges to their authority since the military crushed pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Many dissidents have been harassed into inactivity, imprisoned or exiled.

The petition, made public 40 days after the party installed its new leadership for the next five years, is the latest effort by Chinese intellectuals to push for political reform in a country that many believe is in urgent need of change but also has become more divided. Zhang said he wants to build consensus among people from various factions with often conflicting views.

"Though the people are disgusted by many social injustices, they are yet to have consensus on how to reform the system that creates the injustices, and that has divided and weakened the drive for reform from the people," reads the petition in its opening lines.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying did not comment on the petition during a routine briefing but said China does not suppress media freedom.

But by mid-afternoon Wednesday, the petition had been scrubbed off Zhang Qianfan's profile on the popular microblog site, Sina Weibo.

Beijing-based independent scholar Zhang Lifan is one of the signees. Though he is less optimistic that China's ruling party will initiate political change, he is not giving up. "We are treating a dead horse as if it were still alive," said Zhang, referring to the prospect of political reform.

It is important for the public to let its will be known, said Zhang, who is not related to the Peking University professor. "We'd rather have reform instead of revolution, because that would cost the least," said Zhang, who had also signed Charter 08.

Another signatory is the 85-year-old eminent attorney and human rights advocate Zhang Sizhi, known among Chinese lawyers as "the conscience of the legal world." Zhang said the petition's suggestions would not be unfamiliar to the country's leaders.

"The content of the letter is not new to the country's rulers. They are all clear about it. The question is whether they will take action or not," Zhang Sizhi said. "I can only hope so."

The petition is too mild for some in the dissident community who noted that it does not call for the release of political prisoners such as Liu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize while in prison.

Hong Kong-based Chinese free-speech activist Wen Yunchao said the requests made in the petition were sound but the style in which it was written was "too subservient."

"It's like they are slaves, kneeling there and writing it," Wen said. He said the proposed changes should have been stated more directly.

Wen said the petition wrongly interprets a report released by Communist Party after a recent conclave as indicating the central leadership's resolve to push forward political reforms. "The problem is that these are utter lies," Wen said. "I think that for them to raise their requests in this way is a very terrible thing."

In the universe of serious, meaningful photography, the chance to honor the lives and careers of peers, colleagues and, occasionally, heroes in an end-of-year "those we lost" tribute comes with a grim, one-time-only satisfaction: namely, the opportunity to see, in one place, the work of photographers who would otherwise never, ever be shown together.

(AP) ? The pieces of the puzzle that have been the Lakers' confounding season so far are starting to fall into place.

Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, the defense stepped up, and Los Angeles beat the New York Knicks 100-94 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to five games.

"We're .500," a smiling Dwight Howard said. "We did it on Christmas, too. I knew this day would come."

Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Anthony said he hyperextended his left knee, but expects to play on Wednesday in Phoenix.

Bryant, the league's leading scorer, has topped 30 or more points in nine straight games.

"If you're going to play on Christmas, it's always better to win. Makes it all worthwhile," said Bryant, who would soon hop a flight to Denver, getting there ahead of the Nuggets, who played the Clippers in the other half of the holiday doubleheader at Staples Center.

The Lakers improved to 14-14 ? 9-9 under new coach Mike D'Antoni ? and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. They returned to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Nov. 30.

"It's so early in the season to have turned a corner," Bryant said. "We have everybody in the lineup and we're starting to see how we want to play."

The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. Smith, who had 24 points. But they struggled offensively in the fourth, when Anthony was limited to seven points and Smith had five as the Lakers' defense clamped down. World Peace fouled out with 1:58 to play and the Lakers ahead by four.

World Peace credited his defense on Anthony to "old-school basketball."

"I'm back in shape and it's a little tough to guard me," he said.

Steve Nash said: "This is what he's been doing all year. He gets his hands on a lot of balls, pounds on the other team's best guy. You can't win without that type of effort."

Smith's 3-pointer pulled New York to 96-94. After Pau Gasol made one of two free throws, Smith missed another 3 that would have tied the game at 97 with 32 seconds left.

"We missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of little chippers around the basket, shots that we normally make," Anthony said. "There were some plays that we thought should have went our way down the stretch, but for the most part, we fought. I'll take this effort any night. If we continue to play with this effort, we'll win a lot of games."

With Bryant double-teamed, Nash passed to Gasol, who dunked with 12 seconds to go, punctuating a win that sent Lakers fans, frustrated by the team's struggles and coaching change, home happy. The Lakers avenged a 116-107 loss in New York on Dec. 13.

A smiling Howard called Gasol's driving slam "a submarine dunk because he was very low to the ground."

Gasol responded, "I don't dunk as often as I used to so it felt good. I took it right down the lane and finished strong."

Nash had 16 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in his second game in nearly two months. He missed 24 straight games while recovering from a small fracture in his lower left leg. Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Gasol had 13 points and eight rebounds.

"It was an important win for us as we were a little bit desperate," Nash said. "We've gone through a lot since Mike Brown ? new coach, new offense. It's been a difficult transition."

Bryant had eight of the Lakers' first 10 points to open the fourth during a run that provided their first lead since the opening quarter in a game matching the two teams that have played the most on Christmas Day.

They took the lead for good on Bryant's basket with 7:38 remaining. Anthony and Tyson Chandler were in foul trouble in the fourth, with Chandler fouling out late.

"They just were a little bit more aggressive," Anthony said. "Kobe got it going and Steve Nash hit some big shots down the stretch. When you have a guy like Nash doing that, it's kind of tough. Those guys know how to play. They've been waiting for Steve Nash to get back, so it's just a matter of then sticking it out until he did."

The Knicks opened the third on a 15-5 run, with Anthony setting up on the perimeter and hitting two 3-pointers as part of his 10 points that stretched their lead to 61-53. His jumper provided the Knicks' largest lead of the game, 69-60.

Bryant and Nash ignited the quiet atmosphere by leading a 17-9 run that drew the Lakers to 78-77 going into the fourth. They combined to score 15 points, although Bryant missed two free throws to end the third that would have given the Lakers their first lead since early in the game.

The Knicks' earlier roll dissolved in missed shots and a technical on Chandler for arguing a call.

"We were more determined, fought for everything," Nash said about the second half.

World Peace scored 16 points in the second quarter, including eight in a row, when the Lakers played catch-up most of the way. His 3-pointer gave the Lakers their first lead of the period with 1:10 remaining. Smith tied it up with a free throw before Nash's jumper sent the Lakers into halftime leading 51-49.

"We're playing really well together," World Peace said. "Kobe is really playing excellent now. He's still being aggressive on the offensive end, but he's giving everybody a chance to be aggressive. Pau is making strong, aggressive moves."

Bryant scored the Lakers' final nine points of the first quarter to give them a 25-23 lead. D'Antoni's plan of having Darius Morris guard Anthony didn't last long after he scored five of the Knicks' first seven points.

"I thought he'd get warmed up before he started firing," World Peace said.

NOTES: Bryant surpassed Oscar Robertson as the league's all-time Christmas Day scorer with 383 points. Robertson had 377. ... Knicks F/C Amare Stoudemire shot some before the game. He's been out all season after left knee surgery. "I'm not quite there yet, but I'm making progress," he said. "I've just got to stay patient and stay ready. We've been doing extremely intense work, as far as cardio." ... Knicks C Marcus Camby had four points and four rebounds in 8 minutes. He's been sidelined by a sore left foot and barely played this season. ... Asked about Bryant as an MVP candidate, D'Antoni said, "You can't put anybody MVP if you're below .500." ... In their only other Christmas Day meeting in 1963, the Lakers beat the Knicks 134-126 behind 47 points by Jerry West and 27 from Elgin Baylor. ... Nash said the gift bags in their lockers with the tag, "From Kobe Merry Xmas 2012" contained headphones. "Can't ever have enough," he said. ... The Lakers were all in white, while the Knicks were all in orange down to their socks in a color similar to Syracuse. ... Among the celebs holidaying at Staples Center were Rihanna and Chris Brown, Adam Levine, Samuel L. Jackson, George Lopez and Richard Lewis. Vanessa Bryant and her two young daughters sat courtside opposite the Lakers bench.

Well folks, Christmas is almost upon us, and on behalf of my family, I?d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year. As per tradition, we?ll be having not one, but two ?Christmas days? in our home this year. We?ll be celebrating Swedish Christmas on the 24th, and then English Christmas on the 25th, along with a rather delectable array of food and drink for each day?s main meal. We?ll be having people over to celebrate with us on both days. It?s a lot of work, cooking for seven people one day, and then eight the next but it?s Christmas after all, and for me that?s all about togetherness, friendship, and mutual celebration.

The 25th is going to be a traditional English lunch ? roast turkey, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips, carrots, and sprouts, yorkshire puddings, sausages wrapped in bacon, gravy, cranberry sauce, and all topped off with a Yule Log?and mince pies?with brandy butter. The 24th is going to be a traditional Swedish?Julbord?(Christmas table) ? gravlax, pickled herring, meatballs, sausages, boiled eggs, hard and soft bread, boiled potatoes, Jansson?s Temptation, kavring (a type of bread which I?ll post a recipe for one day soon), beetroot salad (the subject of today?s post), rice porridge, and all rounded off with gingerbread cookies and cake.

Christmas Beetroot Salad

Yum? for some!

Phew ? that?s quite a list. Add to that having to get the timing right and things are looking a bit hair-raising, so thank goodness for simple things, like the beetroot salad which takes mere minutes to throw together. You can make it the night before. No, scratch that, you?should make it the night before, as the colours will infuse over night giving a much more aesthetically pleasing dish. Beetroot haters of the world ? feel free to skip this. If you?re not a fan then this dish isn?t going to change your mind but if you are then this makes a wonderfully light, colourful, healthy and fresh addition to the traditionally starchy, carb-laden meal.

I?m starting to think I?m a bit beetroot-obsessed, I post it so darn much! Anyway though, I?ll leave you for now and will be back after Christmas with the best roast beef! Seriously ? it rocks. I posted a roast beef recipe before but screw that, it?s garbage compared to this. Have a happy and a healthy one y?all!

Christmas Beetroot Salad

Ingredients

  • ~3 large peeled and boiled Beetroot
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Granny Smith Apple
  • ~250g thick Yoghurt, or regular yoghurt, filtered in a coffee filter for an hour to remove excess liquid
  • ~3tbsps Mayonnaise
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Try to make this dish 24 hours in advance. Start off by dicing the beetroot into small cubes. Peel, core, and grate the apple, and then peel and finely chop the onion. Transfer to a large bowl and add in the yoghurt and mayonnaise.
  2. Mix the ingredients well and season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a suitable sized bowl or container and store in the refrigerator. The next day, mix the contents of the bowl again to ensure even sauce and colour distribution and enjoy as a Christmas table accompaniment.
