Islesboro breast cancer survivor to appear on 'NY Med' reality show ...

When Andree Brown agreed to appear on a new reality show about life inside one of New York City?s top hospitals, she?d just learned she had breast cancer.

Brown, a summer resident of Islesboro, was being examined at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital when a filmmaker with ?NY Med,? an eight-part series by ABC News that debuted on July 10, asked to film her. At first, Brown, 57, told the woman with the camera to go away.

Then she reconsidered.

?I thought, is this about me or is this about women, and can I make a contribution by doing this?? Brown said.

The show, airing on Tuesdays throughout the summer, chronicles Brown?s fight against breast cancer following a routine mammogram and ultrasound that led to a mastectomy, chemotherapy and drug therapy. She will be featured in an episode airing at 10 p.m. Aug. 7.

Today, Brown?s feeling ?dynamite? after finishing treatment, enjoying her eighteenth summer on Isleboro, cooking and getting her tennis game back.

?I?m hoping that a woman who has just discovered that she has breast cancer can look at it and say, ?I?m going to have the same strength and I?m going to take care of myself? ? I feel like I made it into a really positive experience,? Brown said.

She credits top-notch care and catching the cancer early for her survival. Key to buoying her spirits throughout the ordeal was preserving most of her hair, made possible through a little-known therapy that cools the scalp during chemotherapy treatments, Brown said.

Three of her friends took turns sitting with Brown through her ?cold cap? sessions, changing the cap every half hour to keep it chilled. Chemotherapy is hard enough for women without the added stress of hair loss, she said, recalling the stories of mothers she met who told of scaring their young children when they took off their hot, itchy wigs.

?I think that?s the one point that could change somebody?s experience,? Brown said. ?If they had their hair, they?d have their dignity and their pride and also they wouldn?t be a red light to other people that they had cancer.?

Brown hopes to raise awareness about cold cap therapy, which some hospitals and oncologists don?t offer because of doubts about its efficacy or the inconvenience. Chemotherapy treatments take twice as long for patients using cold caps, and treatment centers also must install freezers.

?None of that to me is big enough to say no,? Brown said.

The reality show, which features celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz among the hospital?s top doctors, ultimately helped Brown to cope with her diagnosis. She?s become a much more open person, she said.

Brown plans to host a party to watch the Aug. 7 episode. Her son, James, will fly to Maine from San Francisco, where he attends college, to view it with her, and both will see his interview about his mother?s cancer battle for the first time.

Beating the disease came down to her outlook, Brown said. She walked four miles every day throughout her chemotherapy treatment even though all she wanted to do was sleep, she said.

?A lot of it is your attitude,? Brown said. ?It?s about how you are going to look at it.?

Pattana Blog Attaching Wood To Concrete

A very important tip is to use the right tool for each method. When you're dealing with concrete and masonry, you're obviously dealing with extremely hard material. Woodworking hammers are too light and steel drill bits too soft. The concrete is also brittle. Hard sharp chips are likely to fly out as you work on it, so always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.Nails. Nailing wood directly to concrete is probably the simplest, quickest and cheapest method. Unfortunately, once driven, these nails may jar loose from a few hammer blows to the side of the board. So, they are better for temporary fastening. You'll usually find two types of special nails at the hardware store, cut nails and hardened concrete nails. Drive nails with a 2- to 4-lb. hammer. Actually, it's very hard to drive nails into cured (hardened) concrete, even with a 4-lb. hammer. They work best in concrete that's only cured for a few days.Nails can be quite effective in mortar joints, however. Mortar is softer than either the concrete block or brick, and it holds nails fairly well. For best results, drive them right along the joint edge. And here's a professional tip: for improved holding power, run a bead of glue along the backside of your wood before nailing it up.Predrilled Fasteners. There is a family of fasteners that can be driven into a predrilled hole. These not only fasten wood to concrete, but will fasten just about anything else to concrete as well. They install easily, simply drill through the wood and into the concrete and drive the fastener.Drilling the hole is the only difficult part. Use a carbide tip bit. Because these holes are relatively small, your standard 1/4-inch or 3/8 inch power drill can do an adequate job, although each hole may take several minutes to bore. A hammer drill, however, will drill your hole in a matter of seconds. A hammer drill is expensive, but they can be rented. If you have a lot of holes to drill, they'll save a lot of time. It's a good idea to glue your wood to the concrete or masonry with this system as well, especially when using screws. Once screws are jarred loose, they may not retighten.Expansion Fasteners. These fasteners are simple, effective and can carry a heavy load. They may be retightened should they be jarred loose.Because they require a larger hole, you really need a hammer drill to bore the concrete. If you can't buy, borrow or rent one, try boring a 1/8 inch hole first with a carbide bit. Then use progressively larger carbide bits until you reach the proper size.Buy these fasteners long enough to wedge into the concrete as deep as the wood is thick. Drill your hole an extra 1/4 inch deep, since the bolt draws back slightly when tightened.Power Fasteners. These are extremely fast, powerful and dangerous. They are primarily professional tools which any untrained homeowner should steer clear of until they fully understanding the safety precautions. With power fasteners you can quickly nail into just about any concrete or masonry surface. Both the air and the power-actuated systems drive hardened nails through the wood and solidly into the concrete in one shot. Flying metal, wood or concrete are certain hazards, so eye protection is essential.Glue. Over the past ten years construction adhesives have improved and become more specialized. You can securely glue just about anything to a wall now. Since glued wood must be held tightly in place until the glue sets, it's handy to use an adhesive with another fastening system for mutual reinforcement; the glue dampens the vibration and jarring that may weaken the fasteners, and the fasteners hold the wood tightly until the glue sets.Proper preparation ensures a good glue bond. Be sure the wood and the concrete surfaces are clean and dry. Loose paint, surface chalking or moisture will cause the bond to release. When working with a very rough surface, apply a generous bead to bridge the wider gaps between the wood and concrete.

Giant ice avalanches on Saturn's moon Iapetus provide clue to extreme slippage elsewhere in the solar system

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? "We see landslides everywhere in the solar system," says Kelsi Singer, graduate student in earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, "but Saturn's icy moon Iapetus has more giant landslides than any body other than Mars."

The reason, says William McKinnon, PhD, professor of earth and planetary sciences, is Iapetus' spectacular topography. "Not only is the moon out-of-round, but the giant impact basins are very deep, and there's this great mountain ridge that's 20 kilometers (12 miles) high, far higher than Mount Everest.

"So there's a lot of topography and it's just sitting around, and then, from time to time, it gives way," McKinnon says.

Falling from such heights, the ice reaches high speeds -- and then something odd happens.

Somehow, its coefficient of friction drops, and it begins to flow rather than tumble, traveling many miles before it dissipates the energy of the fall and finally comes to rest.

In the July 29 issue of Nature Geoscience, Singer, McKinnon and colleagues Paul M. Schenk of the Lunar and Planetary Institute and Jeffrey M. Moore of the NASA Ames Research Center, describe these giant ice avalanches.

They challenge experimental physicists to measure friction when ice is sliding, and suggest a mechanism that might make ice or rocks slippery, not just during avalanches or landslides, but also during earthquakes or icy moonquakes.

Too many hypotheses

The ice avalanches on Iapetus aren't just large; they're larger than they should be given the forces scientists think set them in motion and bring them to a halt.

The counterpart to the Iapetian ice avalanche on Earth is a long-runout rock landslide, or sturzstrom (German for "fallstream"). Most landslides travel a horizontal distance that is less than twice the distance the rocks have fallen.

On rare occasions, however, a landslide will travel 20 or 30 times farther than it fell, traveling for long distances horizontally or even surging uphill. These extraordinarily mobile landslides, which seem to spill like a fluid rather than tumble like rocks, have long mystified scientists.

The mechanics of a normal runout are straightforward. The debris travels outward until friction within the debris mass and with the ground dissipates the energy the rock gained by falling, and the rock mass comes to rest.

But to explain the exceptionally long runouts, some other mechanism must be invoked as well. Something must be acting to reduce friction during the runout, Singer says.

The trouble is, there is no agreement about what this something might be. Proposals have included a cushion of air, lubrication by water or by rock flour or a thin melted layer. "There are more mechanisms proposed for fiction reduction than I can put on a PowerPoint slide," McKinnon jokes.

"The landslides on Iapetus are a planet-scale experiment that we cannot do in a laboratory or observe on Earth," Singer says. "They give us examples of giant landslides in ice, instead of rock, with a different gravity, and no atmosphere. So any theory of long runout landslides on Earth must also work for avalanches on Iapetus."

An experiment by accident

McKinnon, whose research focuses on the icy satellites of the outer solar system planets, has been studying Iapetus since the Cassini spacecraft flew by it in December 2004 and September 2007 and streamed images of the ice moon to Earth.

Almost everything about Iapetus is odd. It should be spherical, but it's fatter at the equator than at the poles, probably because it froze in place when it was spinning faster than it is now. And it has an extremely tall, razor-striaght mountain range of mysterious origin that wraps most of the way around its equator. Because of its stoutness and giant ridge, the moon looks like an oversized walnut.

If the Iapetian surface locked in place before it could spin down to a sphere, there must be stresses in its surface, McKinnon reasoned. So he suggested Singer check the Cassini images for stress fractures in the ice.

She looked carefully at every Cassini image and didn't find much evidence of fracturing. Instead, she kept finding giant avalanches.

Singer eventually identified 30 massive ice avalanches in the Cassini images -- 17 that had plunged down crater walls and another 13 that had swept down the slides of the equatorial mountain range.

Careful measurements of the heights from which the ice had fallen and the avalanche runout did not find trends consistent with some of the most popular theories for the extraordinary mobility of long-runout landslides.

The scientists say data can't exclude them, however. "We don't have the same range of measurements for the Iapetian avalanches that is available for landslides on Earth and Mars," Singer explains.

But, it is nonetheless clear that the coefficient of friction of the avalanches (as measured by a proxy, the ratio between the drop height and the runout) is not consistent with the coefficients of friction of very cold ice measured in the laboratory.

Coefficients of friction can range from near zero to greater than one. Laboratory measurements of the coefficients for really cold ice lie between 0.55 and 0.7.

"Really cold ice debris is as frictional as beach sand," McKinnon says.

The coefficients for the Iapetus avalanches, however, scatter between 0.1 and 0.3. Something is off here.

A testable hypothesis

In a typical laboratory experiment to measure the frictional coefficient of ice, cylinders of ice are rotated against one another and their resistance to rotation is measured. If ice is moving slowly, it is very frictional.

But if it were moving faster, the friction might be lower.

Would rapid motion make even super-cold ice slippery? That's a testable hypothesis, the scientists point out, and one they hope experimental physicists soon will take for a spin.

Friction isn't trivial

If ice becomes less frictional when traveling at speed, what about rock? "If you had some kind of quick movement, whether it was a landslide or the slip along a fault, the same kind of thing could happen," Singer says.

Geologists now realize that major faults are weaker during earthquakes than laboratory measurements of rocks' coefficients of friction suggest they should be, she says.

But in this case, higher velocity experiments already have been done. At slow slip rates, the friction coefficient of rocks ranges from 0.6 to 0.85. But when the rocks are sliding past one another fast enough, the friction coefficient is near 0.2. That's in the same range as the Iapetian ice avalanche's coefficients.

Nobody is sure what lubricates the faults when they are jolted into motion by an earthquake, but one of the simplest hypotheses is something called flash heating, Singer says. The idea is that as the rocks slide past one another, asperities (tiny contact points) on their surfaces are heated by friction.

Above a critical speed, the heat would not have time to escape the contact points, which would be flash-heated to temperatures high enough to weaken or even melt the rock. This weakening might explain high slip rates and large sliding displacements characteristic of earthquakes.

The case for flash heating is buttressed by the discovery of rocks that seem to have undergone frictional melting, generically called frictionites, or pseudotachylites, along faults and associated with some rock slides, Singer says.

"You might think friction is trivial," McKinnon says, "but it's not. And that goes for friction between ices and friction between rocks. It's really important not just for landslides, but also for earthquakes and even for the stability of the land. And that's why these observations on an ice moon are interesting and thought-provoking."

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: How To Hire The ...

By Russell D. Nheumane

The Internet requires that businesses have significant ecommerce web development to be able to stay competitive. For owners of web design services, selecting a company that provides ecommerce solutions can almost ensure an influx of new customers, if it is done right. But, site owners need to be quite specific about what they want when hiring ecommerce design services. This includes tools for sending and receiving payments, shipment options, and user friendly website design.

The site and business needs to be examined to understand what it needs before the search for a web designer should begin. Ecommerce is a constantly changing field and much can depend on the products the owner is selling and how the owner wants those products presented. Ecommerce web development experts can also help site owners decide what should be on the site, but it is very helpful for the site owner to have already spent time thinking this through.

After deciding what an owner desires to achieve from the ecommerce site, the next step is to understand what services most developers offer. This is often done in consultation with the developer, but can be done alone too. Payment acceptance and processing ought to be one item that every ecommerce site includes. These tools permit the owner to process payments from customers in a wide variety of formats. The very least that should be expected to be provided is credit card and payment system services. For sites that provide items, it is also important to have some kind of shipment interface and program as well.

Once the plan is decided on for the services needed for the site and the owner's needs, web design quotes should be obtained. It's important for the owner not to feel required to utilize a developer just because that developer was consulted during planning, getting quotes from multiple service providers is important. This will make sure that the owner has the largest selection of qualified providers available to compare.

Selecting the best firm is the result of following some specific steps on the part of the site owner. The most important step is outlining the website plan and how the site fits into that plan. Next the owner should learn as much as he or she can about ecommerce design solutions so that the owner can know what to discuss with developers. Finally, the owner should get many quotes to ensure the best developer is selected for the job.

(AP) ? Boston had wasted a five-run lead by the time Pedro Ciriaco stepped to the plate in the ninth inning Saturday night and hit a hard fly ball toward center field. He thought Curtis Granderson would catch it.

Then Granderson went in on the ball and sprinted back in an attempt to catch up.

"I thought I had a chance," Ciriaco said, "so I run like a hurricane."

The ball landed for a go-ahead triple as Granderson fell, and the Red Sox came away with a dramatic 8-6 win over the New York Yankees after Vicente Padilla allowed a tying, two-run homer in the eighth to nemesis Mark Teixeira.

Adrian Gonzalez had four RBIs for the Red Sox, who built a 6-1 lead for Jon Lester.

"We were good tonight, and we were lucky," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "He hit that ball, a knuckleball, 380 feet. It's tough to catch. He's pretty hot right now, so I'd say he was good and we were lucky."

A three-time All-Star, Granderson had expected to make the catch.

"I didn't think it was hit as hard as it was," he said. "And, by the time I tried to get back on it, I couldn't get enough steam to get back to it."

Jacoby Ellsbury's one-out walk off Rafael Soriano (2-1) preceded the hit by Ciriaco, who boosted the lead to two runs when he scored on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly.

Playing designated hitter while David Ortiz is on the disabled list, the 26-year-old Ciriaco had three hits to raise his average to .356 in 59 at-bats. He also had the go-ahead hit in Boston's only other win over the Yankees in eight tries this year, a two-run double off Phil Hughes in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park on July 7.

"He just comes in and plays, has good at-bats, runs the bases well," Valentine said. "Makes us a better team."

It was Granderson's second fielding flub against the Red Sox. In that July 7 game, the Yankees were ahead 3-1 when Granderson called for Daniel Nava's fly ball and allowed it to bounce off his glove as right fielder Darnell McDonald moved past him. Granderson initially was charged with an error, but the official scorer later changed it to McDonald's.

"We haven't seen much of that, him getting turned around like that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But it just shows that it's part of the game and sometimes players are going to have the wrong read on balls. It's going to happen in the course of the season, and it won't be the last one, I'm sure."

Andrew Miller (3-1) got one out for the win, and Alfredo Aceves finished for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

New York started to erase its early deficit in the fifth, when Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer and Derek Jeter had an RBI grounder. Then came another matchup of Padilla and Teixeira, who have been jawing at each other from a distance.

Padilla allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez in the eighth, then threw a called third strike past Jeter. Granderson hit two foul drives deep down the right-field line, the second missing a home run by about a foot, before striking out.

Padilla fell behind 2-0 in the count to Teixeira, then lobbed in a 51 mph curveball for a called strike. Teixeira turned on the next pitch, sending it deep into the right-field bleachers. He stared at the ball as he took four short steps up the line, then went into his home run trot.

Padilla wouldn't discuss anything with media. As reporters approached him in the locker room, he said: "About what? One bad day?" turned and walked out.

Teixeira hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Padilla in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on July 6, sparking a weekend war of words. Padilla accused Teixeira of wronging Latino teammates when they played together on the Texas Rangers in 2006-07, and Teixeira said Padilla threw at hitters and "didn't have a lot of friends in the game." Padilla responded Teixeira would "be better off playing a women's sport."

Teixeira said he's been trying to put the tiff behind.

"Emotion is part of the game, but if you let the emotions get the best of you, especially as a hitter, you swing too hard or you swing at pitches over your head, that does you no good," he said.

Following a rain delay of 2 hours, 4 minutes, Gonzalez hit an RBI double and scored on Will Middlebrook's two-run double in the first, then hit a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the fifth.

Chris Stewart's first home run since September cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Gonzalez boosted the lead with two outs in the fifth when he lined a home run into the right-field bleachers. Gonzalez leads the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .418 (41 for 98).

New Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki raced into the right-center gap to rob Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a catch just in front of the warning track in the seventh.

Lester, who had been 0-3 with a 10.42 ERA in his previous four starts, allowed four runs and four hits in six innings and watched his bullpen blow a lead he left with for the fifth time. He fanned Robinson Cano in the sixth for his 1,000th strikeout.

"We needed to win that game," Lester said. "Guys came back and kept fighting. That was big for us."

NOTES: Valentine caused a stir before the game when he said the Red Sox medical staff instructed him not to play LF Carl Crawford four days in a row, a mandate Valentine said he ignored earlier in the month after the left fielder came off the DL. ... Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona visited with Boston players before the game in the Red Sox clubhouse, preparing for his job as a broadcaster for Sunday night's game on ESPN. ... Sabathia gave up a season-high six runs and eight hits in six innings.

Selecting The Right Retirement Community. More and more people are choosing to move to a retirement community. The very first thing you need to take into consideration is where you want your retirement community to be located. You could choose from an urban environment or a country setting but understanding what your particular needs are ? now and in the future plays a big part in which retirement community you should move to.
Many people like to be close to where they live now, just a little further out.? But some like to move to the city where there are more sights and accessibility.

If you have children, you might also want to consider a location that is near to them so you can more easily spend time with them and with your grandchildren.? In addition, if you have special medical needs, you might want to choose a community that is near to certain medical facilities.? Or, if you are interested in pursuing educational interests that you never had the time for before retirement, a college community might be the best location for you.

Know Your Needs and Desires.? Not all retirement communities are the same, so you need to have a clear idea of what you need and what you want in a retirement community.? First, some retirement communities are set up like apartments, while others utilize manufactured homes, RVs, townhomes and single family homes.? Therefore, you will first need to make a decision regarding which of these building styles is most desirable to you. If you are looking for a little more privacy and ease of access, a retirement community made of manufactured homes or single family homes may be the best option for you.

Be sure to consider your hobbies as well.? In that way, you can select a retirement community that will make it easier for you to pursue those hobbies.? For example, if you enjoy golfing, you might want to find a retirement community that is on a golf course. If you like fishing, then a community near the lake is ideal. If you want to be able to have most of your needs met within the retirement community, you might want to seek out a resort-type community.? On the other hand, if you might occasionally need some assistance with your basic living needs, you might want to consider an active adult community that also offers basic assisted living services.

Once you have your choices narrowed down, contact the retirement communities you are considering and ask for more information.? They will likely send you a packet filled with information that you can browse through.

In many cases, the retirement community will also offer a visitor?s program or a vacation getaway program that will allow you to take a tour of the property or stay overnight. This will help you get a better idea of whether or not the community is right for you.? And remember, before selecting any retirement community try getting a second opinion from a relative or friend. UCC Termination Statements, a Trap for the Unwary: Part Four ...

We are pleased to welcome back guest author, attorney, Bennett L. Cohen to the FCS blog! Read on for the fourth installment in his blog series addressing the intricacies of UCC Termination Statements.

UCC Termination Statements, a Trap for the Unwary: Part Four

If you want to be 100% sure that a UCC filing that has previously been assigned is properly terminated, you will need to exercise due diligence and inquire of the parties as to exactly what was assigned. It may further be necessary to have all secured parties in the chain of that UCC filing terminate or authorize the termination of such initial filing.

There may be more than one secured party of record on a UCC filing. Multiple secured parties can be reflected in the initial UCC financing statement or one or more secured parties can be added in one or more subsequent amendments to the initial UCC financing statement, resulting in multiple secured parties of record. In such case, all secured parties of record must terminate the UCC filing.

Code Section 9-512(e)(2) contemplates that one or more secured parties may be deleted from a UCC filing by amendment, with the proviso that an amendment purporting to delete all secured parties of record is ineffective.

If Bank A and Bank B merge with the surviving bank being Bank B, Bank B becomes the successor to the ?secured party of record? with authority to terminate UCC filings previously filed in favor of Bank A. Official Comment 8 to Code Section 9-509.

Former Milosevic aide takes power in Serbia, EU uneasy

BELGRADE (Reuters) - The former spokesman of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic took power in Serbia on Friday, telling Europe and the Balkans to forget the past and not fear the return of a political alliance that once led the country to war with NATO.

After 12 hours of heated debate, lawmakers in the 250-seat Serbian parliament voted 142 to 72 to endorse Socialist Party leader Ivica Dacic as prime minister at the helm of a coalition with nationalists.

The alliance condemns to the opposition benches the main reformers who ousted Milosevic in 2000, raising concern in the West that Serbia might veer from the path they took towards joining the European Union.

Dacic said EU membership was "a key goal", but that he would not be made to answer anymore for Serbia's dark past.

"If they say the word Balkan means 'blood and honey', there's been enough blood, it's time to feel the taste of honey too," the career politician told the assembly during a debate that ran late into the night.

"Serbia is offering the hand of reconciliation, to all. Let's not deal anymore with the past, let's deal with the future."

The West is closely scrutinizing Dacic's ascent to the most powerful post in Serbia - in alliance with President Tomislav Nikolic's nationalists - for any sign that the country may drift from the EU path chosen by the seven states carved from old federal Yugoslavia.

Nikolic and the Socialists last shared power at the close of Milosevic's disastrous 13-year rule, when his forces expelled almost 1 million ethnic Albanians from Kosovo and NATO bombed in 1999 to wrest the province from him.

Dacic, 46, was Milosevic's spokesman, railing against the West. He now says Serbia's future is in the EU, but Western diplomats admit to doubts over whether he is willing and able to carry out the political and economic reforms it will take.

"A key goal of this government will be the acceleration of European integration and maximum effort to secure a date for the start of accession talks," Dacic said.

KOSOVO CHALLENGE

His government inherits an economy sliding into recession, a jobless rate of 25 percent and a shrinking, ageing population scraping by on an average net monthly wage of 340 euros ($420).

In a speech that cited economists John Maynard Keynes and Paul Krugman and American industrialist Henry Ford, Dacic dismissed calls for "belt-tightening" at the cost of pensions and pay, saying only economic growth would bring down Serbia's growing debt burden of 55 percent of output.

The West says Serbia's progress towards EU membership rests on it coming to terms with the loss of Kosovo, an impoverished territory steeped in history and myth for many Serbs but recognized by almost half the world as independent.

Dacic said he was ready to continue EU-mediated talks with Kosovo aimed at "normalizing life for all citizens". But Serbia would never recognize it as independent, he said.

The EU says it won't have to, at least explicitly, but it will have to loosen its grip on a Serb-populated slice of Kosovo's north, and stop obstructing the country's development.

That will determine how quickly the EU opens accession talks, after making Serbia a candidate for membership in March.

Later on Friday, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule welcomed the new Serbian government but warned about the need for reforms and dialogue with Kosovo.

In a joint statement Ashton and Fule said they "expect the new government to continue to deliver on the European integration agenda, regional cooperation and reconciliation, including ... early resumption of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and swift implementation of the agreements reached."

Ex-Yugoslav republic Slovenia joined the EU in 2004. Croatia is next in 2013 and Montenegro began talks last month.

Dacic was interior minister in the last government with the reformist Democratic Party from 2008, until voters punished the Democrats for perceived elitism and an economic downturn.

The new coalition includes the technocrat United Regions bloc, whose leader Mladjan Dinkic becomes finance minister. Trying to settle markets, Dinkic says Serbia will revive a frozen loan deal with the International Monetary Fund.

Diplomat Ivan Mrkic, ambassador in Cyprus under Milosevic at a time when, reformers say, millions of dollars were siphoned out of Serbia via Nicosia, became foreign minister. ($1 = 0.8130 euros)

Sudanese struggle to ignite their own uprising

CAIRO (AP) ? "I think my country Sudan has really hit rock bottom." Those were the last public words uttered by Usamah Mohamad, a 32-year-old Sudanese web developer-turned-citizen journalist, in a video announcing he would join protests against President Omar al-Bashir.

Mohamad, popular under his Twitter handle "simsimt," was arrested the same day his video was aired. For the next month, his family had no idea where he was. Finally they learned he was in Khartoum's high security prison and were allowed to visit him last week.

He was skinnier and darker, a sign he had been left to bake in the scorching Khartoum sun, people close to his case say. The family itself is saying nothing.

Mohamad and hundreds of others ? no less than 2,000, activists say ? have been detained the past month in a campaign unleashed by the Sudanese government. The crackdown aims to crush a new attempt to launch a protest movement calling for the ouster of al-Bashir, inspired by the Middle East's uprisings that toppled the leaders of Sudan's neighbors Egypt and Libya as well as Tunisia and Yemen.

Anti-government activists see al-Bashir's 23-year-old regime as the ripest in the region to fall. He has been weakened by the loss of oil-rich South Sudan, which became independent last year after two decades of Africa's bloodiest civil war. His regime has had to impose painful economic austerity measures to make up for the loss of revenues from the south's oil, sending inflation up to nearly 40 percent this month. The years-old rebellion in the western Darfur region continues to bleed the country. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in that region.

"We have more reasons than any other Arab country for an uprising," said Siddique Tawer, of an opposition umbrella group. "No other country was split. Sudan was. No other country has a civil war ongoing in Darfur and (fighting along the border with the South)."

"These are enough reasons to topple a regime, aside from the corruption, oppression and the rising cost of living," he said. "The continuation of this regime is dangerous for the rest of the Sudan."

But those troubles could also prolong the life of al-Bashir's regime. Al-Bashir has showed a survivor's talent for using external threats to keep key parts of the public behind him. He is backed by a brutal security machine and a network of interests built on Islamist ideology, economic ties and tribal politics.

At an inauguration of a factory in central Sudan on July 11, al-Bashir ridiculed prospects for an uprising.

"They talk of an Arab Spring. Let me tell them that in Sudan we have a hot summer, a burning hot summer that burns its enemies," al-Bashir said, waving his cane threateningly.

So far, his prediction has borne true. Some activists fled the country, others are lying low amid the crackdown after protests by thousands raged for more than a week in June, the biggest since the Arab Spring began in late 2010. Under censorship, newspapers are not reporting on the protests.

Under a blanket of fear instilled by security agencies, several activists spoke to The Associated Press on condition anonymity to avoid detention or refused to talk at all.

"I think a popular uprising to topple the regime is not an attractive option to the Sudanese right now," said Hassan Haj Ali, a Khartoum University political science professor.

Many are wary of new turmoil after the long civil war and are bracing for a worsening economy. Sudanese also remember how unrest against al-Bashir's predecessors led to military coups, bringing Sudanese "back to square one," he said.

Sudanese and the region worry of further fragmentation, with separatist movements not only in Darfur but also in the east and in the south.

"What remains of Sudan may not hold as one bloc and may become so unstable it reflects on neighboring countries," including South Sudan, said Haj Ali. As a result, regional powers ? and the United States, he said ? may prefer "to deal with the regime in its current condition and not be embroiled in further crises."

Khartoum came close to war with South Sudan early this year. With the two sides in torturous negotiations over oil sharing and borders, al-Bashir's regime can drum up public support with anti-South rhetoric.

Sudan's crushing economic crisis has given youth groups a tool to galvanize the public behind their protest movement.

After years of a boom fueled by southern oil, Sudan has reeled since the south's independence. The crisis is threatening to worsen under austerity measures recommended by the International Monetary Fund to deal with shrinking resources.

Inflation is expected to rise further, electricity bills are going up, and consumer groups are urging a boycott of meat and poultry because of rocketing prices. The currency lost nearly half its value the past year, reaching 4.4 pounds to the dollar officially and six on the black market, according to media reports.

The youth groups, some of them working since 2009, put together a movement through social media and university activism, linking with disgruntled communities of Darfuris and others who live in Khartoum.

On June 16, protests erupted. Female students marched in Khartoum University, were joined by male students, and together they moved into the streets of the capital. Over the next six days, protests broke out at universities in Khartoum and other cities. On the Friday of that week, the strongest day of protests, regular citizens in Khartoum joined, coming out from mosques in marches that numbered several thousand.

"The people demand the downfall of the regime," some chanted, a refrain heard in other Arab uprisings.

Throughout the week, police struck back with tear gas and rubber bullets and ? in at least one case ? live ammunition, according to the London-based Sudanese rights group the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies. Several students were seriously injured. Student militias helped security agents in seizing protesters, according to ACJPS. Finally, Khartoum University's vacation was moved up to prevent more protests.

The movement planned nationwide protests on June 30, coinciding with regime celebrations for the anniversary of al-Bashir's coming to power. Under a security clampdown, protesters managed only a small turnout. But with so many troops in the streets, anniversary parades were not held.

Mohamad, the web developer, was seized at the Friday protest as he tweeted about arrests by agents of the notorious National Security Services in Khartoum's Burri district.

But friends say he may have been targeted because of his video aired the same day on Al-Jazeera English TV. "After 23 years of oppression and injustice, poverty and crime that are all committed under the current regime, change now is an inevitable must," he said in the video.

His detention without charge, while others have been freed, shows how the regime sees information about the protests as the biggest threat, said a friend of Mohammed who was held twice in custody, including once for 11 hours without water.

"He is detained for a month, a treatment reserved usually for a ringleader," the friend said.

Activists report arbitrary arrests of protesters and bloggers and their families in the middle of the night, beatings and humiliation in detention. Two Egyptian female journalists reporting for foreign media amid the unrest were deported.

Some detainees were forced to call fellow activists to arrange meetings that were really sting operations to arrest them. Interrogators threatened to release pictures of women activists wearing revealing clothes to scandalize them in Sudan's conservative society.

One student told ACJPS that an officer threatened to snap his neck while another scraped off his eyebrows, moustache and hair with a blade. "Now we've marked you and if we catch you again protesting we will cut other parts of your body," they told him.

Two activists face serious criminal charges including inciting violence against the regime. One of them, Rudwan Dawoud, who is married to an American and holds U.S. residency, was labeled a spy and could face the death sentence.

Nagui Moussa ? a 26-year old activist from the protest group Girifna, or "We are fed up" ? left to Cairo after being detained twice, deciding he was of more use outside spreading information about the protests.

He says protests may have waned ? because of both the crackdown and the fasting month of Ramadan ? but "people have changed. Why? Because they are seeing the continuous lies of the regime."

Protests in Khartoum make those in the core of Sudan realize that "the injustice is all over, in the center as in the periphery."

"People will see that the one who strikes and tortures in the south, or in Darfur, is the same as the one who strikes and tortures in the north," he said.

No-Fuss Body Building | Health Wellness and Fitness

Outlines For No-Fuss Body Building Aids Advice

Muscle building is a little hard to get into if you don?t know where to begin. This article will help you figure out how to get into muscle building. If you are ready to start putting on some muscle, follow the article below and get yourself on the path to building muscle today!

Any time you are lifting a heavy free weight, it is very important that you have a spotter. This is someone who knows the routine that you are doing and also understands when you are requiring help. Many times this person can become a type of gym buddy as well.

Mental preparedness is important when trying to build muscle. Before you begin any workout, it is important for you to be sure you are in the proper mental state to be able to workout. Injuries occur when someone is not focusing on the workout they are doing. Focus is crucial when working out.

Change your weight lifting program around about once every six weeks to keep from reaching a plateau. After a few weeks your body will become used to your routine and if you don?t change it up, you might not continue to see the results that you want. By mixing things up regularly, you can help to avoid this problem.

Try doing real stairs instead of the stairs that your gym has. This can help change the perspective that you have for working out, give you an additional amount of motivation, burn more fat, and build more muscle. The additional scenery could also help you workout for a longer period of time.

Regardless of how frequent or intense your workout sessions are, if you are not eating sufficiently, your body will not have enough proteins to build muscle. It is therefore critical to eat meals often. You should strive to consume at least 20 grams of protein every three hours. In addition, it is more important to eat often rather than to eat large portions. Visit a spotlight on how to make your own beats for smart tips.

Consider using caffeine on a limited basis as a benefit to bodybuilding. Metabolism can be increased by drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, and caffeine can increase overall calorie burn. The intensity of workout routines can be increased by the stimulant, and caffeine can provide energy after a hard workout.

Building up your muscles requires that you get your diet in order, use the right methods, and commit yourself to the work of building muscle. That can be done, and if you use the information provided in this article, you will soon be able to see and feel the results you are looking for.

Hop over to this website for up to date specifics: how to make your own beats and www.adobe.com.

EAST LANSING, Mich. The secret to the deadly 2011 E. coli outbreak in Germany has been decoded, thanks to research conducted at Michigan State University.

The deadliest E. coli outbreak ever, which caused 54 deaths and sickened more than 3,800 people, was traced to a particularly virulent strain that researchers had never seen in an outbreak before. In the current issue of the academic journal PLoS ONE, a team of researchers led by Shannon Manning, MSU molecular biologist and epidemiologist, suggests a way to potentially tame the killer bacteria.

The strain, E. coli O104:H4, shares some characteristics as other deadly E. coli bacteria, but its combination is novel. Researchers haven't determined the mechanism it uses to cause disease, although Manning and her team were able to find the strain's Achilles heel its biofilm.

By focusing on the bacteria's biofilm, the grouping of many E. coli bacteria that stick to a cell's surface and grow encased in a self-produced protective coat, Manning and colleagues were able to determine why it was so deadly. When the bacterium found in Germany forms a biofilm, it begins to make more toxic genes like the Shiga toxin.

Increased production of the Shiga toxin is the probable culprit that contributed to so many incidents of kidney damage and death during the 2011 outbreak, Manning said.

"What made the German outbreak so different is that many victims suffering from kidney failure were adults," she said. "Rather than attacking adults, other types of E. coli that produce Shiga toxins typically damage kidneys of children under 10."

In addition, the incubation period was considerably longer among individuals infected with the German outbreak strain compared to individuals infected with E. coli O157, a similar bacterium that can also cause illness and death. Manning believes this is because the German strain needs a longer period of time to form a biofilm, whereas biofilms are not important for O157 infections.

"Our research demonstrates that biofilm formation is critical for toxin production and kidney damage," she said. "If we can block the bacteria from forming a stable biofilm, then it is likely that we can prevent future E. coli O104:H4 infections."

The next phase of Manning's research is already focusing on creating mutant strains in an effort to prevent the bacterium from forming a biofilm. This would prevent the disease completely since the conditions would not be favorable for bacterial growth.

San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Discussing Common Defense ...

When people are injured in San Diego car accidents, they face a
difficult situation in terms of recovering compensation for the losses
they have suffered. This is particularly true if someone in this
position attempts to recover this compensation alone and while they are
already dealing with serious injuries. One of the many reasons that this
situation is so difficult is because the defense in these matters will
likely engage in certain tactics that they would avoid if the injured
person had legal representation. That?s why someone in this position
needs the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers.

Below you will find a brief overview of examples of certain tactics that the defense in a San Diego car accident
case could attempt with an injured person who is attempting to protect
his or her legal rights without professional help. You will also find
information regarding the difference that San Diego personal injury
lawyers can make when they become involved in these controversies.

Examples of Common Defense Tactics

As stated above, there are certain tactics that the defense in a car
accident case will attempt if the injured person does not have legal
representation. These tactics are all generally designed to frustrate
the injured person and ultimately to lead that person to become
desperate enough to accept a low settlement offer rather than risk
losing out on the recovery of any compensation at all.

Specifically, these tactics can include delaying the progress of the
claim for as long as possible. This is done because the longer the claim
takes to resolve, the more medical bills and other forms of loss will
pile up. In addition, the statute of limitations can eventually become a
problem for that person such that he or she will simply look to resolve
the matter.

Another common tactic that will be used by defense teams in these
situations involves inundating the plaintiff with documentation and
paperwork that falls within the realm of discovery. This documentation
and these requirements can be very confusing to someone who does not
possess a legal background, and any mistakes that are made during this
phase of litigation can inflict serious harm on the plaintiff?s case.

How San Diego Personal Injury Lawyers Can Help

If someone who has been injured in an accident retains San Diego
personal injury lawyers, the likelihood that these tactics will be
attempted falls. That?s because defense attorneys will understand that
these tactics will be met head-on and that the claim will continue to
move forward in an effort to recover damages that include compensation
for medical costs, lost income and pain and suffering.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash because of a negligent or reckless driver, you need to seek the help of San Diego personal injury lawyers who have been fighting for the rights of clients for many years. Contact the Mitchell | Gilleon Law Firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.
