ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A cost analysis of the technologies needed to transport materials into the stratosphere to reduce the amount of sunlight hitting Earth and therefore reduce the effects of global climate change has shown that they are both feasible and affordable.
Published August 31, 2012, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, the study has shown that the basic technology currently exists and could be assembled and implemented in a number of different forms for less than USD $5 billion a year.
Put into context, the cost of reducing carbon dioxide emissions is currently estimated to be between 0.2 and 2.5 per cent of GDP in the year 2030, which is equivalent to roughly USD $200 to $2000 billion.
Solar radiation management (SRM) looks to induce the effects similar to those observed after volcanic eruptions; however, the authors state that it is not a preferred strategy and that such a claim could only be made after the thorough investigation of the implications, risks and costs associated with these issues.
The authors caution that reducing incident sunlight does nothing at all to reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, nor the resulting increase in the acid content of the oceans. They note that other research has shown that the effects of solar radiation management are not uniform, and would cause different temperature and precipitation changes in different countries.
Co-author of the study, Professor Jay Apt, said: "As economists are beginning to explore the role of several types of geoengineering, it is important that a cost analysis of SRM is carried out. The basic feasibility of SRM with current technology is still being disputed and some political scientists and policy makers are concerned about unilateral action."
In the study, the researchers, from Aurora Flight Sciences, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University, performed an engineering cost analysis on six systems capable of delivering 1-5 million metric tonnes of material to altitudes of 18-30 km: existing aircraft, a new airplane designed to perform at altitudes up to 30 km, a new hybrid airship, rockets, guns and suspended pipes carrying gas or slurry to inject the particles into the atmosphere.
Based on existing research into solar radiation management, the researchers performed their cost analyses for systems that could deliver around one million tonnes of aerosols each year at an altitude between 18 and 25 km and between a latitude range of 30?N and 30?S.
The study concluded that using aircraft is easily within the current capabilities of aerospace engineering, manufacturing and operations. The development of new, specialized aircraft appeared to be the cheapest option, with costs of around $1 to $2 billion a year; existing aircraft would be more expensive as they are not optimized for high altitudes and would need considerable and expensive modifications to do so.
Guns and rockets appeared to be capable of delivering materials at high altitudes but the costs associated with these are much higher than those of airplanes and airships due to their lack of reusability.
Although completely theoretical at this point in time, a large gas pipe, rising to 20 km in the sky and suspended by helium-filled floating platforms, would offer the lowest recurring cost-per-kilogram of particles delivered but the costs of research into the materials required, the development of the pipe and the testing to ensure safety, would be high; the whole system carries a large uncertainty.
Professor Apt continued: "We hope our study will help other scientists looking at more novel methods for dispersing particles and help them to explore methods with increased efficiency and reduced environmental risk."
The researchers make it clear that they have not sought to address the science of aerosols in the stratosphere, nor issues of risk, effectiveness or governance that will add to the costs of solar radiation management geoengineering.

For the last few days my 20 year old son Ian has been back in Australia to attend the funeral of a friend who committed suicide by laying on a railway track. Ian and his companions have spent 4 days together talking, laughing, crying and going through the range of emotions that are involved when you lose a mate. None of them could understand. This friend was the ?happiest? in their group ? he always kept everyone else laughing. To their amazement, none of them knew that their friend was on anti-depressants.
Thankfully society is learning to recognise, accept and deal with depression, and the ?stigma? associated with this mental disorder is disappearing, but not fast enough. My intention in this E-Report is to cover some essential elements of ?Moving Through Depression? that I have gleaned through my experience with people over the last 15 years.
It is very empowering to use techniques to help yourself, to experience the helpful effect and to form the thought ?there is something that I can do about this myself?. There are a number of techniques that can assist ? the purpose of this E-Report is to introduce some.
In a recent newsletter I received from Depression Net, I quote ?The current proven most effective treatment for depression is a combination of antidepressant medication AND therapy. Unfortunately we find that most people still are only aware of ? and getting ? the medication half of treatment. Many have never heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which is one of the most effective therapies for treating depression. In addition, CBT is the most effective treatment for anxiety and many people with anxiety know nothing about it. A clinical or counselling psychologist is generally the first port of call for CBT??
The following information on CBT comes from the website ?www.cognitivetherapy.com
Cognitive behaviour therapy?combines two very effective kinds of therapy ? cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy.
Cognitive therapy?teaches you how certain thinking patterns are causing your symptoms ? by giving you a distorted picture of what?s going on in your life, and making you feel anxious, depressed or angry for no good reason, or provoking you into ill-chosen actions.
Behaviour therapy?helps you weaken the connections between troublesome situations and your habitual reactions to them ? reactions such as fear, depression or rage, and self-defeating or self-damaging behaviour. It also teaches you how to calm your mind and body, so you can feel better, think more clearly, and make better decisions.
When combined into?CBT, behaviour therapy and cognitive therapy provide very powerful tools for stopping your symptoms and getting your life on a more satisfying track.
Let me repeat that the current proven most effective treatment for depression is a combination of anti-depressant medication and therapy. Being on anti-depressants means that at the very least, the sufferer has recognised their illness and visited their doctor. This I applaud. It is a beginning on the road to coping.
The next step is to use various techniques. The following are some which I know have been successful.
A recent ABC TV?s 4 Corners program devoted 45 minutes to depression. A number of the people on the program expressed how important it was to talk about their actual experience of the symptoms of depression. My own experience of handling the murder of my daughters is that when you push things down (by not talking about them) you push the associated thoughts and feelings down to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind houses memory and habits. It is the dream mind. When there are negative thoughts pushed into the subconscious mind, it deals with the problem with hot sweats, nightmares, irrational actions and unexplained anger. This is known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it can contribute to depression. (Much of the beginnings of recognising PTSD started with examining the effects on Vietnam Veterans ? another subject close to my heart.)
Talk to anybody ? your doctor, your therapist and above all your friends. Yes, that?s right, your friends. It?s up to each and every one of us to learn about depression, to recognise its symptoms and to encourage our friends to talk. Don?t hide depression ? it?s the worst thing you can do.
Science has shown that we talk to ourselves over 50,000 times a day. Professor Roger Sperry, who received the Nobel Prize for dividing the functions of the Left and Right brain in 1981, proved that negative thoughts attract negative thoughts, which lead to negative action and to negative reaction. Thank goodness for the corollary ? positive thoughts attract positive thoughts, which lead to positive action and positive reaction.
So what?s the key in this? Awareness! We need to be aware of our own self-talk. There is no doubt that negative self talk can drive us into depression. My encouragement is to listen to your self-talk, become aware of it, and if it?s negative, change it! Statements such as, I can do this, I?m good at what I do, every day and in every way I get better and better, my self confidence is improving each day, (and many more) can replace any negative statements. I would recommend using a type of CBT to form new habits in the subconscious mind, and employing a system of goals, visualisation and emotion. (Refer to my book?Piece of Mind.)
How we react to situations also needs to be examined. After a negative situation or an event takes place, a trigger mechanism within you is activated which can send you ?straight into depression?. It could be a thought about a previous failure, an event with a friend, or something that sparks sadness or anger that starts the downward spiral. Using a CBT method I teach about Peaceful Place which can act as an ?interrupt mechanism? (to the spiralling negative thoughts) which in turn can ?nip the negative thought in the bud?. You can learn to immediately replace the negative thought with a positive event ? thus responding instead of reacting. Sometimes I slip into negative thoughts about the events of my daughters? murder and I immediately bring in and swamp this negative thought with a picture of my three smiling daughters going horse riding or camping.
Another CBT method is to learn about anchors. You can develop an anchor (for example the movement of a forefinger to touch the centre of your forehead ? it can really be anything) which is linked to good positive events with good emotion. As soon as a negative event arises you give yourself your anchor, and then you are swamped with good emotion and can respond instead of react negatively. (Once again I would recommend my book?Piece of Mind.)
The subconscious mind aims to keep us where we are and prevent us from changing, by creating doubt, negative self talk and self sabotage. It is up to the conscious mind to change the subconscious mind, and we can do that by using CBT methods of visualisation, goals and active meditation. How is this possible? By using the fact that the subconscious does not know the difference between imagination and reality, (look at a dream about falling ? in the dream you really think that you?re falling and yet you are not), we can reprogram the subconscious mind. Because of this amazing fact the subconscious mind will accept the new ?programming? when using these CBT methods.
The power of imagination within the subconscious mind will work for all of us just the same way that great sports people are taught to use their mind to achieve fantastic results. (The healing process that was used by Jana Pitman in the 2004 Olympics is a wonderful example.) This process, when used for healing, is called psycho-neuro-immunology and science has shown that we can increase the T4 Cell count (the fighting cell) and so improve our own immune system.
It?s easy to stay in a negative pattern. The subconscious mind wants it ? it wants what it?s got and it doesn?t want anything new or different. Your job is to recognise this and then use conscious mind methods to get through to the subconscious mind to create new habits. When the subconscious mind has got the new habit, it will want it ? the new habit ? and life will become easier.
An important part of loving yourself is taking personal responsibility for yourself. This involves elements such as taking responsibility for your own thinking process, for your own therapy program, for what you watch, read, eat, how much sleep you have, and more. It is important to love yourself to enhance the healing process.
Worry and anxiousness from past emotional events can often rekindle injustice, resentfulness or hopelessness. Often blame is involved with these thoughts. It is important that you know that you have a choice when dealing with adversity. You can choose to learn from adversity. Never say ?Why me?? because the answer to this question sets up guilt. Ask the question ?What is there that I can learn from this event?? If you ask a positive question, you will get positive answers.
A good way to proceed when such events arise is to handle them using meditation (another CBT method). In the meditation you can acknowledge to yourself that you have done the best you can do in this situation. Acknowledge to yourself that any others involved have done the best that they can do in this situation. No matter what you?ve done up until now, know that you?ve probably done the best that you knew how to do at the time. One way forward is to say to yourself ?I?ve done the best that I could do ? now that I know more, I?ll do better next time.? You accept all the good thoughts and say ?Yes? to them. You reject any negative thoughts by saying ?No? to them. You acknowledge yourself for who you are and know that you are growing. You can love and accept yourself for the way you are. You say to yourself ? ?I love and accept myself?. You feel and know the loving. You feel and know the Peace. You feel and know the Joy. You feel and know the Compassion in yourself and others. You know that your own soul, your deeper inner self is positively affected by your positive actions. You know the real you is OK.
In this way you are taking personal responsibility for yourself ? loving yourself and healing yourself. Your self confidence grows and grows.
I haven?t mentioned the established links between ?recreational drugs? and depression. Marijuana has been established as one of the worst and it can in fact ?tip one into depression?. My advice ? tell the world about this proven fact thus creating awareness ? and of course stay away from drugs.
Exercise helps to handle depression ? ensure you have a good, healthy balanced diet and make exercise part of a daily regime. Always make sure that you consult your physician and if advised take any anti-depressant medication knowing that most of the time you will be able to adjust doses and have periods which are anti-depressant free.
A quick word on meditation. Many people think that meditation is ?think nothing? or ?clear your mind of thoughts?. I describe that sort of meditation as passive. Active meditation on the other hand is total focus and concentration on the topic and includes processes of guided imagery, visualisation and emotion.
Take personal responsibility for yourself (love yourself) by doing as much about depression as you can yourself. Talk about it ? share your experiences with trusted friends. Learn CBT methods to handle negative thoughts, to change from reacting to responding to negative events ? both past and present, and use anchors, goals, visualisation and active meditation to enhance your life.
So, please help with depression by encouraging others to be aware of the issues and indeed how they can empower themselves.

The original owner of the mansion, built in 1893, was George B. Douglas and family. In 1906, Douglas negotiated a house trade with Brucemore mansion owner, widow Caroline Sinclair. The structure has been the home of John R. Turner and Son funeral homes since 1924. Iowa artist Grant Wood was paid to help decorate the mortuary at that time. ?
CEDAR RAPIDS ? Commercial real estate broker Scott Byers is hard-pressed to think of a similar building that?s gone on the market in recent years in the Cedar Rapids area.
A former house-turned funeral home known as Turner Mortuary or the George B. Douglas mansion, 800 Second Ave. SE, has been listed for sale by the Linge family, owners of Cedar Memorial.
?It?s an interesting property to represent,? Byers said. ?It?s not your cookie-cutter real estate.?
The 10,085 square-foot house, built in 1893, is listed for $645,000.
Byers noted that the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains design touches by artist Grant Wood, including iron gates and stained glass windows.
Grant Wood stands in his studio at 5 Turner Alley in Cedar Rapids. In the mid-1920s, he lived in the carriage house of the former George Douglas mansion, which was being converted to John B. Turner and Son Mortuary at the time.
From 1924 to 1935, Wood lived next to the home above a carriage house at 5 Turner Alley, where he painted ?American Gothic? and other works.
The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art owns that studio ? a gift from the Linge family ? which is also on the National Register, but is not included in the sale.
Executive Director Terry Pitts said owning another building is not in the museum?s mission.
Museum executive committee members met with Byers, but ?we made the decision that we were not potential purchasers,? he said.
Pitts would like to see an area college or arts non-profit buy the building to provide synergy with the Grant Wood Studio.
Otherwise, he could also see it used as an office building or for other commercial purposes.
?No one sees any scenario in which the Douglas Mansion would be torn down and we would, of course, fight that tooth and nail,? Pitts wrote in a letter to the museum?s Board of Trustees this week.
Pitts said this summer?s demolition of First Christian Church, just a block away, served as ?a lesson about what could go wrong.?
A parking lot will be installed where the church was razed and a four-story parking ramp is under construction next to the Grant Wood Studio for the new Physicians? Clinic of Iowa medical pavilion.
Cedar Memorial president John Linge said the family would oppose any demolition plan.

The mansion is one of few remaining near downtown Cedar Rapids and sits in the city?s new medical district.
Its history extends to the historic Brucemore estate, 2160 Linden Dr. SE.
Brucemore Executive Director David Janssen noted that Caroline Sinclair, who owned the estate, traded homes in 1906 with the George Douglas family so she could live in the city and the Douglasses moved to what was then the countryside.
?It was a big deal,? Janssen said of the swap, considered the largest real estate transaction in the city?s history at the time.
John B. Turner acquired the property from the Sinclairs in 1923 and converted it into Turner Mortuary.
Linge said Cedar Memorial, which purchased Turner Funeral Homes in 1978, has not used the building for funerals for several years.
In 1982, the building was renovated to reflect the Victorian era and for years, students intending to study mortuary science lived on the building?s third floor, he said.
After the Floods of 2008, Theatre Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Symphony/Orchestra Iowa were headquartered at the site.
Families prefer more modern settings for funerals, along with convenient parking that is offered at other Cedar Memorial locations, Linge? noted.
A staff member held a wedding inside the building in recent years, which prompted the family to think it could serve as a destination event center or other business.
Linge said the building was recently tuck-pointed and has a new heating and cooling system.
?She?s got real good bones,? he said.

Timeline:
1891 George B. Douglas purchases three adjacent Second Avenue lots on which to build a new home. George B. Douglas? father was one of the founders of Quaker Oats, while he founded the Douglas Starch Works. A few years later, construction begins on the Douglas? new residence and carriage house. The architect?s identity is not known.
1906 George B. Douglas completes a deal with Caroline Sinclair, owner of Brucemore, to exchange the Douglas mansion for the Brucemore mansion. The Sinclair family eventually moves into 800 Second Avenue. At some point during their tenure here, the Sinclairs have the entire carriage house moved about 40 feet to the east.
1920s After the popularization of the automobile, the 600 and 700 blocks of Second Avenue became known as Auto Alley because of all the car dealerships and service stations located there.
1923 John B. Turner, who established his mortuary business in 1888, and his son David Turner acquire the property from the Sinclairs and being the process of converting it into Turner Mortuary. It opens to the public in 1924 and The Gazette reports Grant Wood ?was responsible for the decorating and furnishing of the interior, and the landscaping of the grounds. He not only personally supervised the work, but also did much of it himself.? Wood also designed the iron gates at the front entrance. The brick barn in the rear of the property was converted into a ?modern garage, with space for six cars.?
1924 At the suggestion of the Turners, Wood begins to build a studio and residence above the garage. The ability to live rent-free means Wood can eventually give up teaching his job at McKinley High School. The Community Players produce their first play before a tiny audience in Grant Wood?s studio, starting the theater group that leads today?s Theatre Cedar Rapids.
1932 A fire burns part of the studio, injuring Grant, Nan, and their mother. Grant had to replace the original wooden floor with the one that remains today.
1935 John B. Turner dies at the age of 74. Wood moves out of 5 Turner Alley into a home he purchases in Iowa City. Over the next 65 years, the Studio is rented out as an apartment and even boutique on occasion.
1954 David Turner dies.
1972 John Bu. Turner II (son of David Turner) and his wife Happy donate 84 works by Grant Wood to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. They make additional gifts through 1983.
1978 Cedar Memorial Funeral Homes, founded by David Linge, purchases Turner Funeral Homes.
1982 The Douglas Mansion and Grant Wood Studio are placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
1983 John B. Turner II dies.
2000 The last tenant moves out of 5 Turner Alley.
2002 The Grant Wood Studio building and related property are donated to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
2004 Grant Wood Studio & Visitor Center opens to the public.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The euro rose against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday on bets the European Central Bank would act soon to tackle the bloc's debt crisis while crude prices edged higher as tropical storm Isaac approached the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Wall Street fell slightly at the open in a session expected to be light as investors eye a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday. Daily volume in U.S. equities was the lowest of the year on Monday.
U.S. crude prices rose 0.4 percent and Brent edged up 0.1 percent as tropical storm Isaac neared hurricane strength in the Gulf of Mexico, forcing companies to close down U.S. oil rigs and refineries.
Investors were looking ahead to Friday's speech Bernanke at an annual meeting of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. ECB's Draghi will no longer attend the conference due to a heavy workload, a move that gave support to the euro. The single currency rose 0.5 percent to $1.2559.
Upbeat U.S. housing data made it harder for investors to determine if the Fed will announce further stimulus to the U.S. economy, a bet that has supported a recent rally in equities and other risk assets.
"This is another data point the Fed could use to say they have time before they need to make a decision on implementing some kind of accommodative policy," said Todd Schoenberger, managing principal at the BlackBay Group in New York.
"Bernanke could still give us some clue about (more stimulus), but we're extremely vulnerable for a disappointment if we don't get it."
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 17.96 points, or 0.14 percent, to 13,106.71. The S&P 500 Index <.spx> lost 2.15 points, or 0.15 percent, to 1,408.29. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dipped 2.32 points, or 0.08 percent, to 3,070.87.
An MSCI gauge of global equities <.world> fell 0.27 percent and the pan European FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> was off 0.8 percent.
Global growth worries resurfaced after Japan cut its assessment for the economy, citing slowdowns in the United States and China as well as Europe's debt crisis.
The commodity-linked Australian dollar hit a five-week low of $1.0346.
Adding to signals of weakness, Spain said its recession had deepened in the second quarter as domestic spending slumped in the wake of tough austerity measures aimed at tackling the government's fiscal problems.
U.S. Treasuries prices edged up ahead of a sale of $35 billion of two-year notes as traders anticipated hints from Bernanke of possible further economic stimulus.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 4/32, with the yield at 1.6369 percent.

Ants get stuff done without anyone in control. Understanding how they do what they do could help us design more robust and efficient networks, according to a biologist who studies ant colony behavior.
A recent study shows that harvester ants, for example, regulate how many ants are out searching for food in a way that resembles how Internet protocols regulate the amount of data being transferred according to the amount of available bandwidth.?
The protocol, called the Transmission Control Protocol, sends out packets of data and waits until it receives an acknowledgement that the packet was received before sending out more packets.
An acknowledgement that comes back slower than the data was sent is a sign of traffic congestion, so the data source scales back its rate of data transmission. If the acknowledgment comes back faster than it was sent, the reverse is true and the data transfer speed is increased.
Harvester ants behave the same way when searching for food. The rate at which foragers leave the nest to look for seeds corresponds to the rate at which ants return and thus to food availability, according to Deborah Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University in California.
Individual ants try not to return to the nest empty-handed. When seeds are plentiful, the foragers return quickly, meaning more ants will leave the nest to find food. If they return slowly, the system is throttled down.
Gordon?s colleague, Balaji Prabhakar, a professor of computer science at Stanford, made the connection between the ant behavior and the way the Internet protocol works. They published their findings on the so-called "anternet"?in the Aug. 23 issue of PLoS Computational Biology.?
In this case, humans designed an algorithm to solve a traffic congestion problem on the Internet before they found the solution in an ant colony.
If we study the ants first, ?we are likely to learn about some new solutions to large-scale network problems,? Gordon told me Monday.?
This may be particularly true, she said, as the Internet becomes larger and unwieldy and expensive to operate as more and more data is moved to the cloud.
?We already know that ants are good at a particular kind of problem that we are trying to solve,? she said. ?That is, how to operate systems with lots of information and moving around complicated pathways and no central control.?
One solution to operating more complex networks may be the introduction of randomness into the system, as ant colonies do.
?It will still work well enough and it?s a lot cheaper and more effective than trying to [specify everything centrally], so you can actually use less information to get the same result,? she explained in a follow up email.
Doing that means accepting that a certain level of randomness is helpful to the functioning of a system, not damaging.
?That?s what the ants can teach us. They have ways of [organizing networks] that use more randomness and more redundancy,? Gordon said.

The body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed while covering the anti-regime movement in Syria's second city was flown home on Saturday.
Mika Yamamoto apparently came under fire Monday from pro-government troops in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fighting erupted there last month, according to her long-time colleague Kazutaka Sato.
"I am sorry to say that I cannot find words about the fact that I have her come back this way," an emotional Sato told a news conference at Tokyo's Narita airport.
"I think she has really worked hard. You have really worked hard. That's what I want to tell her now" added Sato, her colleague from the small but respected Japan Press.
Yamamoto, 45, is the fourth foreign journalist to have been killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo. She had covered several armed conflicts, including those in Afghanistan and Iraq with Sato.
Yamamoto was a known face on Japanese television, who came to prominence after surviving a US tank shelling on the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad in 2003 in which two journalists, one from Reuters and one from a Spanish broadcaster, were killed.
Her body was flown from Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines plane, accompanied by Sato and two of Yamamoto's sisters.
A dozen of the plane's crew and airport workers offered a silent prayer after the coffin carrying her body was lowered on to the tarmac.
Her body was to be carried to her home in Tokyo and autopsied by police to determine whether she was deliberately targeted, media reports said.
"I want to come close to the truth about how she died," said Sato. "She was tender and had a strong sense of justice. She was straight and hot blooded."
